The Colorado Transportation Commission has approved Winter Park Resort’s request for a $1.5 million grant to bulid a boarding platform at the resort and install rail safety devices to protect the train at Fraser, Colorado, during its layover. This grant which will be matched by local communities and a symbolic contribution by ColoRail moves the Winter Park Express service a giant step closer to opening in January, 2017. It was noted by one Commissioner that this measure received more public support than any other in recent memory! Turnout at the Commission meeting Thursday morning was strong – thanks to all who came out!
While we cannot say we have fully achieved our ski-train goal, major progress is at hand. Amtrak is running two trips from Denver Union Station to the Winter Park ski area on Saturday and Sunday, March 14-15. Everyone involved hopes this demonstration proves the efficacy of running a full-fledged ski train next winter.
